The idea of the conservatory originated as far back as Roman times. Instead of glass, sheets of a mineral-based material known as mica were used to create buildings that were both very bright and well-insulated. However, the first “modern” conservatory is thought to be the “Glass House” standing in the grounds of Oxford University, opened in 1637.
Like their predecessor, the orangery, conservatories were traditionally used as greenhouses, storing exotic plants like citrus trees before slowly evolving into today’s spacious living areas. The dawn of the Industrial Revolution brought new infrastructure that aided these feats of “glass architecture”, such as steel beams between the panels – stronger and less expensive than iron – and in 1845 a tax on the weight of glass was finally removed, allowing for much thicker windows.
“We’re very pleased with our new conservatory and your workmanship. Thanks for Lloyd and his input as well. This is the second one you have built for us. Thanks Gary for looking after us” Mr & Mrs S, July 2020
But the popularity of conservatories only really surged after the unveiling of Crystal Palace, constructed in Hyde Park during the Great Exhibition of 1851. Joseph Paxton’s design, featuring nearly 300,000 individual panes of glass, was at the time the largest indoor space on the planet!
Since the 1970s, conservatories have undergone something of a second renaissance, boosted by everything from double-glazing to hi-tech, energy efficient “smart” materials. Modern conservatories may incorporate aluminium, wood and uPVC, but are always technically defined as being at least 50% glass. And the result? An open, yet cosy, and hugely versatile extension to your home, and a way to make good use of the garden at any time of year!
“We are thrilled with our beautiful, newly renovated conservatory, and we appreciate the respect and courtesy shown by everyone. Thank you for assuring us complete satisfaction” Mr and Mrs W, October 2019
“We would like to thank you and all your staff and fitters for all the work you have done on our flat in Sheringham. We are very pleased with the windows now they are finished and the quality they give. We shall recommend you to many other people.”
