You’ve no doubt seen the recent adverts on TV. This weekend (25th – 27th January), the RSPB is hosting its annual Big Garden Birdwatch, one of the world’s biggest wildlife surveys, where millions of participants spend an hour counting all the birds they can see in the name of research and conservation.
As it happens, Norfolk is quite a hub for wildlife, not least due to the idyllic marshes and rivers of the Broads, the UK’s largest protected wetland. It is said to contain as many as 11,000 different species, including allusive birds like the bearded tit and the marsh harrier. Looking to the sea, the Cromer Shoals Chalk Beds have been described as “Britain’s Great Barrier Reef”, with rare sightings of basking sharks and even the discovery of a new species of coral, dubbed the “purple sponge”. Blakeney Point also holds the honour of being England’s most popular breeding site for grey seals, with more than 3000 newborns in the last two years alone!
The only downside is that, at this time of year, keeping an eye on nature comes with added chill factor! Aside from being warm and comfortable seating areas, conservatories and orangeries offer an excellent means of seeing your back garden – and any furry guests – without freezing in it! “Extremely good communications throughout process. Quality of windows is excellent and priced competitively. The fitters worked hard and left no mess whatsoever. Minor issues dealt with promptly and courteously. Thanks” Mrs S, July 2020
