How do Orangeries differ from Conservatories?
The design of a traditional orangery differs somewhat from that of the popular conservatory, in both construction and purpose.
The main difference in the structure of an orangery is the roof, which incorporates a glazed lantern, meaning that the pitch of the roof tends to be lower, usually with an angle of less than 25 degrees, instead of the 30+ degrees of a conservatory.
As only a small part of an orangery roof is glazed, as opposed to the entire area of a conservatory roof, the interior of an orangery has a softer, comfortable feel. A wide, hidden box-gutter is fitted to the perimeter of the lantern, enabling water to drain into traditional hoppers and downpipes via a chute system.
Another major difference in the design is the sidewall, with orangeries offering a more substantial structure compared to the typical conservatory. An entablature (deep-moulded fascia) surrounds the perimeter of the doors and windows and has a wide lead cap, the surface of which drains into the box-gutter.
Classic orangeries have traditional colonnades - columns flanking the windows and doors below the entablature, consisting of period bases and detailing, and contain similar internal period features. It is these features that define an orangery.
