What is an Orangery?

How do Orangeries differ from Conservatories?

The design of a traditional orangery differs somewhat from that of the popular conservatory, in both construction and purpose.

The main difference in the structure of an orangery is the roof, which incorporates a glazed lantern, meaning that the pitch of the roof tends to be lower, usually with an angle of less than 25 degrees, instead of the 30+ degrees of a conservatory.

As only a small part of an orangery roof is glazed, as opposed to the entire area of a conservatory roof, the interior of an orangery has a softer, comfortable feel. A wide, hidden box-gutter is fitted to the perimeter of the lantern, enabling water to drain into traditional hoppers and downpipes via a chute system.

Another major difference in the design is the sidewall, with orangeries offering a more substantial structure compared to the typical conservatory. An entablature (deep-moulded fascia) surrounds the perimeter of the doors and windows and has a wide lead cap, the surface of which drains into the box-gutter.

Classic orangeries have traditional colonnades - columns flanking the windows and doors below the entablature, consisting of period bases and detailing, and contain similar internal period features. It is these features that define an orangery.

“We are thrilled with our beautiful, newly renovated conservatory, and we appreciate the respect and courtesy shown by everyone. Thank you for assuring us complete satisfaction” Mr and Mrs W, October 2019

“I compared your price and products with a competitor and found Lloyd very helpful and not ‘pushy’. The installation team of Lee and Matty were always on time, courteous and efficient. I am very pleased with the result. Chris the plasterer is working as I write this and I am sure I will be pleased with final result”

Mr B June 2019

“Matty and Ash were lovely. They were super nice to my dog and worked really well. They were neat and tidy and cleared up when they said they would. You have two amazing staff members” Mrs J, November 2019
